Frequently Asked Questions
Heavenly London is a British demi-fine jewellery brand making lab-grown diamond, moissanite and cubic zirconia jewellery in sterling silver, plated with gold or rhodium. This page answers the questions we're asked most often, about our stones, materials, sizing, delivery, returns and care.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined diamond. Both are pure crystallised carbon in the same cubic structure, both measure 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and both have a refractive index of 2.42.
The only difference is where the crystal formed. A lab-grown stone is grown in a reactor over roughly two to four weeks, while a mined stone formed underground over a far longer geological timescale. Gemmological laboratories including IGI and GIA grade lab-grown diamonds on the same 4Cs scale and issue certificates stating the growth method. In 2018 the US Federal Trade Commission removed the word "natural" from its definition of a diamond for this reason.
What is the difference between a lab-grown diamond, moissanite and cubic zirconia?
They are three different materials, not three grades of the same thing. A lab-grown diamond is carbon and is identical to a mined diamond. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a separate mineral that is slightly softer than diamond but throws noticeably more coloured fire. Cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide, softer again, and the only one of the three that dulls with everyday wear.
| Lab-grown diamond | Moissanite | Cubic zirconia | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition | Carbon | Silicon carbide | Zirconium dioxide |
| Hardness (Mohs) | 10 | 9.25 | 8 to 8.5 |
| Refractive index | 2.42 | 2.65 to 2.69 | 2.15 to 2.18 |
| Dispersion (fire) | 0.044 | 0.104 | 0.058 to 0.066 |
| Reads as diamond on a thermal tester | Yes | On some testers | No |
| Everyday wear | Indefinite | Indefinite | Clouds over time |
Heavenly London sets all three, so the choice is about budget and the look you want rather than about quality tiers.
Is Heavenly London jewellery real gold and silver?
Yes. Around 90% of Heavenly London pieces are recycled sterling silver plated with 24ct gold or rhodium, a rare, corrosion-resistant metal used for its bright white finish. The remaining 10% are solid 14ct gold or brass.
Plating is a thinner layer than solid gold, which is why it needs a bit more care than fine jewellery: chemicals, chlorine and heat wear it faster than they would a heavier gold layer. That is what keeps demi-fine pieces affordable, and it is why we cover looking after it in detail on our care page.
Will Heavenly London jewellery tarnish or fade?
Sterling silver can naturally oxidise and tarnish with air exposure, and gold or rhodium plating will wear thinner with friction. Both are normal properties of the materials rather than faults.
Cosmetics, hairspray, perfume and lotions all contain chemicals that speed up tarnishing on plated jewellery, so put jewellery on last, after these products. Avoid chlorine, saltwater and high heat such as saunas or steam rooms. Polish regularly with a soft cloth, and store each piece separately in the tarnish-resistant pouch or box it arrived in.
Can I shower, swim or sleep in my jewellery?
Sleeping in earrings is fine. Showering, swimming and hot tubs are not recommended for any Heavenly London piece.
Water alone is harmless, but soap and shampoo leave a film on the stones that flattens their sparkle, and chlorine attacks sterling silver and speeds up plating wear. Salt water does the same more slowly. Nothing catastrophic happens after one swim, and the damage is cumulative over months of it. The practical rule is that anything with detergent or chlorine in it comes off first, and pieces go back on when your skin is dry.
How long does UK delivery take?
Standard UK delivery with Royal Mail costs £5 and takes 2 to 4 working days, or is free on orders over £150. Express delivery costs £8 and arrives the next working day if you order before 1pm.
Orders placed after 3pm, or at weekends and on UK bank holidays, are dispatched the next working day, and a signature is required for express deliveries. See our full delivery, returns and warranty page for European and rest-of-world rates.
What is Heavenly London's returns policy?
Heavenly London accepts returns within 21 days of delivery on unused pieces in their original condition and packaging, started through our returns portal.
Return shipping costs are deducted from your refund, which is processed within 10 days of your return being inspected. Earrings cannot be returned, for hygiene reasons, and sample sale items are non-returnable. Full step-by-step instructions are on our delivery, returns and warranty page.
Does Heavenly London ship internationally?
Yes. Heavenly London ships worldwide from the UK. Standard European delivery costs €7 and takes 7 to 21 working days, or choose DHL Express for €20 in 2 to 5 working days.
Rest-of-world pricing is calculated at checkout, with the same choice of a 7 to 21 working day standard service or 2 to 5 working day DHL Express. Import duties and taxes on international orders are the recipient's responsibility. See our full delivery, returns and warranty page for details.
How do I find my ring size?
Measure a ring you already wear on the same finger. Place it on a printed ring size chart and match the inner circle, or measure the internal diameter in millimetres and convert it: a 17.3mm internal diameter is a UK size N.
Two things throw the measurement off. Fingers are up to half a size larger at the end of a warm day than first thing in the morning, so measure in the evening. And wide bands sit tighter than thin ones, so size up by half for a band over 6mm. If you are between sizes, go up. We also have a printable ring sizer you can print at home and use with the conversion chart included.
Is Heavenly London jewellery ethical and sustainable?
Yes. Heavenly London is B Corp certified, meeting an independently verified standard for social and environmental performance, and every stone in the collection is lab-created, whether that is a lab-grown diamond, moissanite or cubic zirconia, so no stone is mined.
Precious metals are responsibly sourced and conflict-free. Our silver supplier is a member of the Thai Silver Exporters Association and the Thai Chamber of Commerce and holds BWC (Buy with Confidence) accreditation, and our metal refinery is accredited on the LBMA's Responsible Gold and Silver Guidance list. Packaging uses FSC-certified cardboard and bags made from 80% recycled plastic that are fully recyclable. Read more on our sustainability page.
Who is Heavenly London?
Heavenly London is a British demi-fine jewellery brand specialising in lab-grown diamond, moissanite and cubic zirconia pieces set in sterling silver and gold. It is a mother-and-daughter business founded in 1993, which began by making pieces for friends and family before becoming a commercial brand.
The collection covers earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets, including a range of interchangeable detachable earrings, and sells direct through heavenlylondon.com as well as through selected stockists. The brand positions itself as everyday luxury: fine jewellery design and stone quality without a mined-diamond price. Read more on our about page.
Does Heavenly London offer a warranty or repairs?
Every Heavenly London piece is covered by a six-month warranty against manufacturing defects, which covers things like a failed clasp or a soldered joint that separates.
The warranty is void if the damage was caused by the customer, and it does not cover tarnishing caused by chemical contact, such as perfume or chlorine. Lost items cannot be replaced. To make a claim, email hello@heavenlylondon.com with your order number and a photograph.
